This is a very important term in the lives of Year 6. The children will be participating in Sats tests in May and then preparing for transition to Secondary School later in the term. It is a very busy term and the children will be involved in a number of activities including Sports Day, an Aztec workshop, the residential trip to Bradfield College with a trip to the Houses of Parliament and a West End theatre production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sex education lessons, the Leaver's play and Leaver's outing at the end of Term. We will be very sorry to see the children leave Churchend but we are secure in the knowledge that we have prepared them for Secondary school and we wish them all the very best as they move forward to this new and exciting period in their lives.
This document outlines important information for Year 6. It contains a breakdown of the curriculum for the term and contains a weekly timetable. Although PE and swimming will be Thursday and Friday, the children do need their kit in school every day and must have their swimming kit on Friday as well.
We have a very exciting term ahead which we are all looking forward to. Mr Pearse will be teaching Maths, PE, PSHE, and Spellings. Mrs Hill will be teaching English, Combined Studies, and Spelling. Mrs Clark will be teaching Science and Mrs Allen will be teaching French.
We will be studying The Aztecs in our Combined Studies (history, geography, art, DT, ICT and music) unit during this term. The attached overview together with the class timetable will give more detail regarding what we will be learning.
In English we will also be continuing our SATs revision in preparation for the tests in May and then moving on to the study of information texts, persuasive texts, newspaper reports and a novel study around the theme of the Aztecs .
*Homework will continue to take the form of either a piece of extended writing or a reading comprehension and will be given out on Friday and taken in the following Wednesday.
*Spelling day is Wednesday and the children will be tested on this day and then given a new set of spellings to learn. The children will be in a spelling group according to their level and may well not be with their class teacher. The children’s list for the term is on the school website.
*Talk Homework and will be given out on a Monday so that the children have had time to discuss it before Friday’s writing lesson.
In maths, we will continue to review all Maths concepts. We will be having weekly homework, which will go out on a Wednesday for the following Monday. Maths is taught by Mr Pearse.
We are very lucky as we will have a weekly brass instrument workshop with Berkshire Maestros and a weekly drumming lesson with Andy.
Even though the children are in Year 6, they still need to read regularly to an adult. They will take part in weekly guided reading sessions in school but should be still reading at home. If you require any further information about our day, then please do not hesitate to ask.
