Welcome to Year 5 Hawks and Falcons
The Hawk class will be led by Mr Allen and the Falcon Class will be led by Miss Rush. We are fortunate to have support from Mrs Simpson, Mrs Gillespie, Mrs Scott & Miss Allen to teach in Year 5.
We are aiming for most of the information you need about Year 5 to be available on the class web page, if you can’t find what you need, please let us know. We will use the school text message to send last minute reminders/ requests but important dates etc. will be in the school newsletter.
Although we will be expecting an increased level of independence from the children we will be dismissing our classes onto the playground at the end of the day and may use this as an opportunity to touch base with you. We will also be out to collect the class in the morning and are very happy to catch up on little matters at that time but please understand that we can’t hold up the start of the day for longer conversations at that time. If you need to talk to one of us at length or in private please phone or mail the office to arrange an appointment for us to call you back.
PE will be on Tuesday morning for Falcon class and Thursday morning for Hawk class. On these days, children should wear their PE kit to school. Please make sure kit is labelled and that children have warm layers for outdoors, we will go out in all weathers. Please a change of indoor schools on PE days, as outdoor school may become muddy. Also, provide a change on clothes should your child become wet.
Spanish – Miss Rush will take the class for Spanish.
Spelling will be taught in class on a Tuesday and words will be tested the following Tuesday. Some practise is done in school but most children will need some support in also learning their spellings at home. Some weeks there will be a specific rule, other weeks may just be a selection of words from the National Curriculum list.
English homework will vary in form but will come home on a Tuesday and needs to be handed in by the following Monday. Maths will be set on-line on MyMaths on a Friday. The children’s individual log-ins will be written in your child's reading record. Please inform us of any problems with access.
Our expectation is that children read at least three times a week with an adult outside of school. Children will take part in weekly guided reading sessions in school but even fluent readers should still be sharing a school book at home to ensure there is breadth to their reading. Children will independently record their reading on a chart in class and will put their books in for changing when required. School books and reading records should be in school every day and ALL READING RECORDS WILL BE CHECKED ON THURSDAYS.
It is vitally important that children are fluent in their times tables by this point in their education. We are using Times Tables Rock Stars as a way of engaging and supporting children to develop their fluency and confidence. Pupils will have individual log-ins and teachers will receive reports and monitor their activity. It would be ideal if children accessed this site for a few minutes each day. Please let us know if you can’t provide access to the system and we will ensure the children are able to access TT rocks stars during the school day or are provided with an alternative.
We will be using the "marble jar" reward system in class to support our behaviour policy. The children are already aware of the three main school rules and we will continually work on how they can demonstrate their mastery of these both in class and around school. The children will work together to earn a treat for the whole class (earning marbles to fill the jar). Individual achievements will also be celebrated in Golden Book assemblies on Fridays and termly at our values assemblies.
We have some fantastic topics to cover this term including South Africa and Ancient Greece: details of these will be made available on the curriculum pages of the web site. We'll be reading two books to support these topics: the modern classic - Journey to Jo'burg (Beverley Naidoo) and the acclaimed adventure - Who Let the Gods Out (Max Evans). We hope to be visiting the Winchester Science Museum in Novemeber to support our teaching of Forces and Space science topics.
If you require any further information about the Year 5 classes, then please do not hesitate to contact us.
