Happy New Year!!
This term Elephant class will be taught by Mrs Armstrong from Monday – Wednesday (with Mrs Scott teaching the class on a Wednesday afternoon) and Mrs Burridge on Thursday and Friday. Mrs Scott will continue to as our class Teaching assistant and be in class every morning. Our timetables and homework arrangements remain unchanged.
We are aiming for most of the information you need about Elephant Class to be available on the class web page, if you can’t find what you need, please let us know. We will use ClassDojo or the school text message to send last minute reminders/ requests but important dates etc. will be on the school newsletter.
Although we will be expecting an increased level of independence from the children we are likely to accompany the class to the library doors at the end of the day to touch base with you. We will also be out to collect the class in the morning and are very happy to catch up on little matters at that time but please understand that we can’t hold up the start of the day for bigger talks at that time. If you need to talk to one of us at length or in private please phone or mail the office to either make an appointment or ask for us to call you back. The three of us share information about the children constantly so please be assured that if you speak to one of us about something important regarding your child, the other teachers will be made aware of this.
Please find the Elephant class timetable and homework timetable for the Autumn Term on the web page and displayed by the library door.
PE will be on Monday afternoons but PE kit should be in every day to allow for changes and extras please. Please make sure kit is labelled and that children have warm layers for outdoors, we will go out in all weathers.
Spanish – Miss Pickford will take the class for Spanish on a Friday afternoon.
Spelling will now be taught in class on a Tuesday and words will be tested every Tuesday. Some practise is done in school but most children will need some support in also learning their spellings at home. Some weeks there will be a specific rule, other weeks may just be a selection of words from the National Curriculum list.
English & Maths homework will vary in form but will come home on a Thursday and needs to be handed in by the following Monday. Maths will be marked in class on a Monday so it really is crucial that it comes back on time.
Tables will be tested on a Monday and their practise test book (showing the score they achieved) will be sent home on Monday or Tuesday to practise for the following Monday. Children need to be able to fluently recall facts in division questions as well as multiplication questions. The children will carry on from the point they had reached at the end of Year 4.
Our expectation is that children read at least three times a week with an adult outside of school. Children will take part in weekly guided reading sessions in school but even fluent readers should still be sharing a school book at home to ensure there is breadth to their reading. Children will independently record their reading on a chart in class and will put their books in for changing when required. School books and reading records should be in school every day and ALL READING RECORDS WILL BE CHECKED ON THURSDAYS.
We will be using the traffic light system in class to support our behaviour policy. The children are already aware of the three main school rules and we will continually work on how they can demonstrate their mastery of these in class and around school. The children will work together to earn a treat for the whole class (earning marbles to fill the jar). Individually, a star of the week will be chosen each Friday based on effort & achievements throughout the week.
We have some fantastic topics to cover this year and details of these will be made available on the curriculum pages of the web site.
If you require any further information about Elephant class, then please do not hesitate to contact us.
