Welcome to Year 3 Penguins and Sharks!
We in the Year 3 team hope your children have enjoyed their Summer Holidays and are eager to get started on their Year 3 journey. This year there are two classes in Year 3, called the Sharks and the Penguins.
The Sharks class is taught by Mr Roscoe and the teaching assistant is Miss Forrest.
The Penguin class is taught by Mrs Burridge. The teaching assistant in this class is Mrs Stretten.
The children will be learning Spanish this term, taught by our Spanish Specialist, Miss Pickford and music by our resident Music Maestro, Miss Kemp.
PE will be on Thursday afternoon for both classes, but PE kit should be in every day to allow for changes and extras please.
Lunchtimes start at 12:15, with Cafe Crunch offering fantastic, balanced meal choices. Lunch orders must be organised in advance and children are not able to order on a daily basis. If there are any issues with lunches, please let the school know as soon as possible.
At the end of the day, children will be dismissed from the door at the bottom of the Year 3 stairs. Please make sure belongings are labelled as the cloakrooms are quite busy and despite everyone’s best efforts things can end up in the wrong place!
Curriculum – Our overarching topic this term will be an exciting one to get Year 3 started with; The Romans! This will be elaborated on in our topic pages, but this topic will be used to help support a lot of the learning in our lessons throughout the term, especially English!
This is an outline of how homework will run each week.
Spelling lessons will be taught on Wednesday mornings. The half termly spellings list will be sent at the beginning of the term and can also be found on the Year 3 page of the website, as well as on the door to the Year 3 area.
English homework will vary in form but will come home on a Thursday and needs to be handed in by the following Tuesday.
Maths homework will predominantly be online via the MyMaths website: https://www.mymaths.co.uk/ . Each child will have their own log in, which will be sent home with them in a letter.
In KS2, children need to be able to confidently recall up to their 12 times table. We have therefore decided to use Timetable Rockstars, a website that the children can use at home to practice their tables and challenge others in class, including teachers! The children will be informed of their log in details at school. To help record the children’s progress, they will have to complete the “Studio” function 10 times to record a time; the time will change as the children practice. Timetable Rockstars will also change the tables your children need to work on automatically, so the more practice they do, the more they will improve. There will also be time scheduled in school to allow the children extra time to work on them, especially if they do not have access to a computer at home, so please let your class teacher know if this is the case.
Children will need to read at least 3 times a week to an adult. They will take part in weekly guided reading sessions in school but children should still be reading at home. Books and reading records must be brought into class every day. Our book changing days are Monday, Wednesday and Friday, however children are encouraged to read additional, age appropriate books to supplement their school reading book and they will receive a rewarded for this. As books become longer it is not expected that the children read a book a day. A shorter period of quality time with an adult listening to the expression, attention to punctuation and checking the understanding is more valuable than rushing to read a whole book each day. We want to foster a love of reading and to help the children to enjoy reading, so please feel free to ask for any advice if you need it.
We will be using ClassDoJo to support our behaviour policy. The children have already discussed the school rules and how they can demonstrate their understanding of these in class and around school. Parents and carers, who register on ClassDoJo, will receive a weekly summary of the points that their child has earned plus any comments made by teachers. The points will count towards class and personal awards and rewards. The system can be used to message the teachers but if a message is urgent please phone or email the school office as well.
Swimming lessons will begin next week on WEDNESDAY 18th SEPTEMEBER. Lessons will run between 2:00 and 3:00, with each lesson being half an hour. This does not include time taken for changing, so please be patient if we are running late. If possible, please do not bring anything unnecessary to school that day, to ensure that we can dismiss the children as smoothly as possible. Please note, all children must wear a swimming cap. This is a requirement from the swimming pool for hygiene reasons. This is a great opportunity for all children to learn and improve a crucial life skill.
If you require any further information about Year 3, then please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.
