Welcome back to the Summer Term of Year 2
The Year 2 team would like to welcome you back after what we hope was a wonderful Easter break. The sun is well and truly shining and we're really excited for all of the learning and fun experiences we've got planned for this half term.
This term we’re going to be learning about Animals in our Combined Studies work for the first half term and then Pirates in the final term. In Combined Studies the children will get the opportunity to learn about nocturnal animals and their adaptations. We have already been lucky enough to have a visit from an owl specialist. The children will also be exploring endangered animals and companies like the RSPCA who work with us to help look after animals. This topic also links to our Science unit where we are learning about mini worlds including mini beasts. Alongside these fantastic topics we have some excellent trips planned including a trip to the local Mosque on Thursday 3rd May and a trip to the Oceanarium in Bournemouth on Friday 8th June. If you haven’t already returned permission slips for these trips, please do so.
In Literacy we are currently studying non-chronological reports which link to our unit on animals. The children have been enjoying learning and using subject specific vocabulary in their writing as well as using a range of conjunctions. After this unit, we will be working on poems and hope that you can find time at home to enjoy sharing, performing and reading poetry. Perhaps in preparation for this you could find a poem which your child can practice, read and share in class. Our final unit of work will be on extended stories.
Reading - The way in which we conduct Guided Reading has slightly changed and so now every Monday all children work within small groups, led by an adult, to read, discuss and answer questions based on their understanding of the book. Later in the week they have opportunities to complete other comprehension related tasks and questions which support their reading comprehension. Please continue to read regularly with your child and sign their reading record book.
Grammar – The children are participating in regular Grammar lessons to support their understanding of punctuation and word classes.
In Maths, we will be completing experiments and investigations to support the children’s work on reading and interpreting graphs. All of the Maths topics we have covered this year will be revisited and revised throughout our learning. Wednesday mornings still start with a mental maths speed test which is a very important skill for the children to develop. Please ensure they learn their weekly times tables and practice regularly.
SATs week will take place week beginning the 21st of May. This is an opportunity for your child to showcase their progress and everything they have learnt in Literacy and Maths by the end of KS1. Despite tests taking place Monday to Thursday, the week is a very enjoyable one in which we have planned some really fun tasks too. SATs is not something we want your child to be worried or anxious about and we encourage you to remind them that doing their best is enough.
We really hope this final term is a memorable and enjoyable one for all of the children.
