Welcome back! We hope you had a restful half term break and that you are excited about Summer term!
Our teacher is Mr Holden. We are also very lucky to have other helpers in our class including Mrs Baines and Miss Parker in the afternoons. We welcome any parent/grandparent helpers so feel free to pop in and see us.
Year 1 has lots of exciting topics for the children to explore and we will be conducting a piece of writing every Friday in our Big Write sessions. Please remember to talk with the children about their ‘talk homework’ topic in preparation for the big write on a Friday! This will go out every Monday. In Literacy we will be begin with looking at poems about the seaside and also enjoy some fantasy type stories later in the term.
We really enjoyed last term's work on our Toys topic, some of the photos of our trip to Legoland are below! This term our topic is based around the Seaside, we will be finding out about different seaside locations, how seasides have changed over time and what it is like to visit seaside locations including sharing our own experiences.
Phonics and spelling will be implemented through our Read Write Inc. We will practise writing more independently by using our phonic knowledge. Spellings will take place every Thursday.
Our Literacy will be based on non-fiction text types including recounts and instructions and stories with familiar settings.
In numeracy, we will be improving our counting skills as well as using number bonding to help with our addition and subtraction.
In Science we will be learning about the seasons, drawing on our experiences of visiting Rushall Woods earlier in the year and looking for signs of summer in our local environment.
Indoor P.E. will be on a Monday outdoor PE will be on a Wednesday. Please ensure there is a full P.E kit in school all week as these times may change on occasions.
IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE P.E. KIT IS NAMED PLEASE
As the weather will be getting warmer, please ensure your child has a water bottle and a sun cap.
We also visit the library every Wednesday afternoon so please bring in your child's library book every Tuesday or Wednesday for return.
On a Thursday afternoon, Mrs Proctor teaches us with Miss Parker. We do ICT and RE. In ICT, we have been learning to create posters using 'Publisher' and improve our mouse control. In this last term, we have been composing our own music to represent different emotions and changing weather.
In RE we have learnt all about Shabbat, the weekly celebration by Jewish people. As part of this, we made our own Challah bread which was delicious! This term, we are still learning about the Jewish faith but about the festival of Chanukah. To begin this topic, we prepared our own party for Teddy who turned six last week. Much fun was had with popping party balloons, party food and party games!
In RE this term, we are finding out about the Christian story of Easter. The children found out about Palm sunday and how Christians celebrate it today with parades and processions. We made palm leaves ourselves and imagined how the crowds and Jesus felt on this occasion. We then re-enacted the story, with singing, cheering and waving of our leaves.
We have made Easter Gardens. We remembered the story that Jesus died and was placed in a tomb where he came back to life. We used stones, moss, flowers, sticks and other resources to make the garden surrounding the tomb where he lay. Can you spot the tomb and the cross on the hill.
In Music, we have been exploring the use of percussion instruments and using them to accompany different stories. The children have been amazing at keeping a regular beat and have shown great enthusiasm in these lessons!
