Welcome to year 1
Welcome back, We hope you enjoyed the half term break.
Our teachers are Mrs Smithers and Mrs Holmes. We are also very lucky to have other helpers in our class including Mrs Baines, Mrs Waters and Maureen. Miss Beasley and Miss Salmon also help us 2 afternoons a week taking out target groups to help us with our learning.
Our topic is 'the seaside' this term. We will be begin our topic by taking a 'virtual' trip to the seaside and looking at the main features and what there is to do at the seaside. We will be using maps in our geography lessons to locate the beaches in the UK and to see where the nearest beach is to Reading.
In our history lessons we will be learning about what seaside holidays used to be like a long time ago and looking at what people did for entertainment. We will be comparing this with nowadays and discussing the similarities and the differences.
In our art lessons, we will use the seaside theme, shells, pebbles, rocks, waves, sand etc to inspire our own ideas. We will record from observation and focus of elements of lines, shapes and textures.
We will use natural materials to make a sculpture. Through the use of clay we will be creating our own seaside themed sculpture.
Science this term we will be learning about Ourselves. We will learn about our bodies and how humans are similar and different from other animals. We will be learning to group and classify living things into groups. We will be investigating how our bodies change as we grow.
In our ICT lessons, we will be learning about databases and learning about how to sort and group information. We will be creating our own bar charts and graphs to sort information using software.
In English we will be focusing on our phonics and spelling
in our Read Write Inc time. On a Friday we will be using our different writing skills in our big write sessions. We will practise writing more independently by using our phonic knowledge.
Please remember to talk with the children about their ‘talk homework’ topic in preparation for the big write on a Friday.
We are looking forward to doing lots of counting in 2s, 5s and 10s this term. Also we will be learning about multiplication and how to use the 'x' sign in sums. We will be learning about quarter past and quarter to using time and the clocks. We will be carrying out lots of fun, practical activities too in maths to help us to understand weight and measure.
P.E. will be on a Tuesday and a Friday. Please ensure there is a full P.E kit in school all week as these times may change on occasions.
