NEWSLETTER – DECEMBER 2020

What a year!  It has been a challenging one for all of us within the Churchend community.  We are by no means out of the woods yet but we are all hoping for a positive 2021.  May I wish you all a Happy Christmas, have a fantastic holiday and a Healthy New Year.

The Curriculum

Our curriculum is diverse and rich at Churchend and we have tried to maintain this despite the challenges of the corona virus. All subjects continue to be taught to give the children a wide range of knowledge and skills. To make up for lost time over the lockdown 1.0 we have manged to do intervention and support for children who have needed it, within the lesson structure.

The children have been assessed regularly over the term and they have had formal written assessments over the past two weeks. Our monitoring shows that the majority of the children are making excellent progress with their learning and they must be praised for their hard work and diligence. We have noticed there is also a correlation between those who practise reading, spelling and mental maths at home and the ability to make rapid progress. Where possible we have tried to maintain a broad and balanced curriculum which includes children going on educational visits where it is safe to do so.

Finance

Despite being funded 6% less than in 2010, Churchend has been in a very good place financially in 2020. The fiscal prudence we adopted has ensured that we have been able to weather the covid storms. We have just been audited and completed 2019/20 with a healthy surplus that has been used for capital improvements. Early Years have had new floors and the walls painted. Key Stage 2 have had the walls fixed and painted. The CCTV system has been upgraded. Roof leaks, fences and grounds have all had improvements. We have invested in new books, teaching resources and computers/ laptops. We have increased the budget costs on teachers to be able to deliver greater support to children who need it most. Unfortunately, the corona virus has also put a strain on our finances as we enter the 2020/21 budget year. Costs have soared in many areas and we have lost income from our Teaching School and After School Club. Fortunately, we have strong reserves to carry us through and we will make adjustments to our spending over the next three years.

COVID Guidelines

We continue to monitor all the latest Government Guidelines with regards to the safety of our pupils and staff.  Please keep an eye on our website www.churchendacademy.com as we will regularly update any relevant information for parents via this platform.

Staffing

We have welcomed several new members of staff this term including some new teaching assistants and a new part time caretaker who works in the afternoon.  In January we will have a new teacher in Reception.  Mrs Telford will be working alongside Mrs Proctor in Squirrel class.  Mrs Hughes who is currently on maternity leave gave birth to a baby boy in October. The family are all doing very well.

Café Crunch

From January 2021 the school lunches will be managed by Chartwells contract caterers.  The staff in the kitchen remain the same but you will be required to order and pay differently.  You will have received an email about the new system with Parent Pay.  Chartwells will be managing all the orders/payments so you will go directly through them and not the school office.  Chartwells provide school lunches for the majority of schools in Reading so are very experienced at providing the service we require. From January you will not longer order or pay for school lunches via the Scopay system. Any Scopay credits/debits for lunches will get transferred to Parent Pay. Chartwells will be slowly increasing the number and variety of meals as we return to normal over spring and as soon as we can safely move back into the dining room.

Parent Parking

Sadly, we are having an increasing number of complaints from our local residents that parents are parking very inconsiderately on the local roads when dropping off and collecting their children from school.  Please do not park on Conwy Close or Bevan Close.  The roads are far too narrow for extra cars to park and some parents are blocking driveways so residents can’t get into their drives. One disabled resident asked a parent not to park across the drive and received abuse in reply.  Whilst I appreciate that parking is very difficult at peak times, this is not a reason to just park anywhere because you think you won’t be long picking up your child.  Please give yourself a few more minutes and park a bit further away from the school.  I realise that it is probably only a handful of offending parents but it is still not acceptable behaviour.

Spring Term Clubs

NSSport will be continuing with their after school clubs.  Please go onto their website to book and pay directly with them.  They will re-start week commencing 11th January and continue for 10 weeks. Also, Rock Steady Music who run group lessons during school time on a Friday afternoon will be continuing next term.  Booking and payment for them is also via their website. As soon as we are able to move out of the bubble system we will introduce the teacher led clubs.

School office/entrance foyer

May I remind parents that if they need to come into the entrance by the office they need to wear a face covering.  Please use the intercom system for enquiries.  We also now have a post box on the outside wall if you need to drop any paperwork into school.  Thank you.
