We completed assessments of reading, writing and maths in ks1 and 2 and year 4 did their national times table check with nearly half the cohort achieving 100% with an average of 23/25 overall.

Data For the whole cohort Meeting Age Related Expectations (EXS) or working at Greater Depth (GDS) assessed using NFER Assessments.

After a very disruptive 2020 and 2021 it is very pleasing to note that the children have bounced back and closed most gaps in their learning. To have 70%+ children achieving EXS and above is incredible and children and teaching staff must be congratulated for the tremendous efforts they have made to make up ground with all the disruptions. We aspire to achieve 70% in ks1 and 80%+ in ks2. The GDS scores are outstanding. Anything above 25% at GDS is excellent and many of the cohorts have exceeded that in maths and reading. Writing scores, though still high, show less progress due to the impact of the pandemic and the difficulty of modelling writing remotely and gathering enough evidence.  The data shows us that ks1 have been impacted most by the pandemic because they have been in education the shortest time and so have less of a foundation to fall back on. KS2 have had a strong base of education through their 3 -7 years in school and have bounced back quicker. Focused intervention over the next few years will enable year 1 and 2 to make up the difference. Year 2 and 6 writing was moderated by external moderators from West Berkshire Education whilst the years 1, 3-5 were moderated internally against other schools samples of work. Not only were our judgements accurate but the children’s work stood out as significantly of a higher standard. Thank you to all our mums and dads who have supported their children’s learning during the lockdown as it ensured they could maintain their high standards.

Year 6 are performing their play virtually on Monday having their final assembly and BBQ outside on Tuesday. Parents please see the year 6 information letter.

Return to school after the summer holiday is on the 6 September. A letter will be sent out on the 2nd September about expectations and drop off times.

This is my last communication at Churchend School and I would like to thank the whole community for their support over the past 20 years that I have taught at this school. It is a fantastic school with high expectations and a nurturing environment. In 2012 we were the top school in Berkshire for year 6 achievement but at the same time we had amassed 87 trophies over the years for wins in sports competitions at District, County and National level. In 2015 we were Rolls Royce prize winners for science. This was only the tip of the iceberg as all our children have been part of a rich and diverse curriculum and have participated in wonderful educational visits and had many adventures to prepare them for a great life. After 33 years in education, it is now time for me to take a break before I start my next adventure.

The sun seems to have come out so have a great summer.
