Chinese New Year

We have been learning about Chinese New Year. 2016 is the year of the monkey. We learnt the story of how the years are named after different animals after they had a race for the Jade Emperor.

It is a time for new clothes and celebrating with friends. People decorate their homes with the colour red for good luck and the colour yellow meaning wealth. There are often firework displays and gifts of lai see (lucky money) in red envelopes.

People like to watch lion dancing (2 people making the body of a lion) and dragon dancing (a team of people making the body of a dragon).

We made lai see and looked at some Chinese artefacts. We also tried some lion and dragon dancing.
